Ethiopian Air Force to Celebrate 90 Years of Service and National Pride on November 30

Addis Ababa, November 11, 2025 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Air Force is set to celebrate its 90th anniversary on November 30, showcasing its historic role in defending the nation’s sovereignty while highlighting modern advances in manpower, combat infrastructure, and armaments, Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Yilma Merdasa said Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing on preparations for the milestone, Lieutenant General Yilma described the Air Force as “one of Ethiopia’s most prestigious institutions,” emphasizing that it has been central to protecting the country and producing heroes who have sacrificed their lives for Ethiopia.

“This year’s celebration will present to the public the achievements of the Ethiopian Air Force and demonstrate how we are building an institution that is fully suited to Ethiopia’s needs through strategic development of personnel, combat infrastructure, and weaponry,” he said.

The anniversary, themed “Ethiopian Air Force: A Symbol of Unity and Freedom,” will feature conferences, exhibitions, air shows, and a 10-kilometer run.

For his part, Bishoftu Mayor Alemayehu Assefa noted that the event is expected to enhance the city’s recognition and has already contributed to its development.

Seleshi Sehin, President of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation, said the 10-kilometer race will attract international athletes from neighboring countries, with total prize money of up to half a million birr for winners, and Shimelis Dawit, Head of the Oromia Regional Athletics Federation, praised the competition for promoting athletics and community participation.

Lieutenant General Yilma highlighted that Ethiopia’s Air Force is part of the country’s long tradition of modern state institutions, dating back to early achievements in air services, telecommunications, and banking, making Ethiopia a pioneer in the region.

“The Ethiopian Air Force has faithfully safeguarded the nation for 90 years,” he said. “Its service continues to be a pillar of unity, development, and national pride.”
