Addis Ababa, July 10, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier and one of the world’s fastest-growing airline brands, has officially launched its first direct passenger service to Hanoi, Vietnam, marking a new chapter in its global expansion.
The inaugural flight, which took off today from Addis Ababa, will operate four times per week and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Africa and Southeast Asia.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew announced that the addition of Hanoi brings the airline’s total number of destinations in Asia to 28.
“This new route marks a major milestone in our efforts to strengthen air links between Africa and Southeast Asia,” Mr. Mesfin said. “It will foster increased trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Ethiopia and Vietnam, and across the wider regions.”
He also revealed that Ethiopian Airlines is currently in discussions with Vietnam Airlines to explore future collaboration and expand their respective networks.
The direct flight to Hanoi is anticipated to serve not only as a bridge between the two countries but also as a strategic link for African and Southeast Asian travelers and businesses navigating the growing interregional market.
Founded in 1946, Ethiopian Airlines has grown into Africa’s most successful and profitable carrier.
It operates a comprehensive network of international passenger and cargo flights to destinations around the globe, as well as domestic services across Ethiopia.
As a proud member of the Star Alliance, the airline continues to enhance its global presence with a modern fleet of over 140 aircraft, including state-of-the-art Airbus A350s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
The launch of the Hanoi route also follows through on one of the major bilateral agreements reached during Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s official visit to Vietnam in May 2025.
As part of the high-level discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in transport and trade, Ethiopia and Vietnam signed a deal to open a direct air link between their capitals.
The agreement, signed between the respective aviation authorities of both countries, was designed to facilitate closer economic ties, increase the movement of goods and people, and boost tourism and investment opportunities across both regions.
This strategic development underscores the growing momentum in Ethiopia–Vietnam relations and reflects the broader commitment of both nations to deepen partnerships through practical and forward-looking initiatives.
