Ethiopian Airlines Making Steady Progress Toward Vision 2035, CEO Mesfin Tasew Affirms

Addis Ababa, July 13, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Airlines is making steady and substantial progress in implementing its Vision 2035 strategy, a transformative roadmap designed to position the carrier among the world’s leading and most competitive aviation groups, according to Group CEO Mesfin Tasew.

Recognized as Africa’s largest airline and one of the fastest-growing global aviation brands, Ethiopian Airlines continues to embody an African success story — one that has translated a bold vision into a world-class reality over the past eight decades. The airline currently serves over 160 passenger and cargo destinations across five continents.

More than just a carrier, Ethiopian plays a strategic role in connecting Africa to the rest of the world.

Vision 2035 is rooted in a commitment to safe, secure, market-responsive, and customer-focused services across a diverse portfolio that includes passenger and cargo operations, logistics, aviation training, airport management, ground handling, aircraft maintenance (MRO), aerospace manufacturing, and travel and tourism.

CEO Mesfin stated that the airline is implementing the roadmap with an emphasis on “fast and profitable growth.” Key components of this effort include network expansion, fleet modernization, and enhanced operational efficiency.

“As part of this strategy, we’ve continued to open new routes,” he said, citing recent additions such as Sharjah (UAE), Hyderabad (India), Oporto (Portugal), and Hanoi (Vietnam). He noted that Ethiopian inaugurated its Hanoi route this Thursday, underscoring its ongoing global expansion.

Increasing the frequency of flights to existing destinations also remains a key focus, Mesfin added. He revealed that the airline is actively exploring new long-haul opportunities, including a potential launch of services to Australia. A feasibility study for that route is currently underway.

On fleet development, Mesfin confirmed that Ethiopian has placed orders for approximately 120 new aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus. These include Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the next-generation 777X, along with Airbus A350s. The airline is also currently receiving deliveries of the Boeing 737 MAX, with two aircraft received last month and more scheduled for arrival.

To enhance its regional capacity, the airline is evaluating options for acquiring additional 100-seat aircraft, with new orders expected to be placed soon.

Beyond fleet and route expansion, Ethiopian is also deepening its global footprint through strategic partnerships. The CEO disclosed that the airline is currently collaborating with four foreign carriers and remains open to additional joint ventures.

“Several countries have expressed interest in partnering with us to establish their own national carriers,” he told local news agency ENA. “Our approach typically begins with a feasibility study to assess the viability of such initiatives.”

Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic momentum signals a continued rise as a global aviation leader, firmly anchored in its African identity and driven by innovation, connectivity, and resilience.
