Ethiopian and Pakistani air force chiefs pledge deeper cooperation

Addis Ababa, August 28, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia and Pakistan have agreed to step up cooperation between their air forces, pledging to expand joint training, technology sharing, and operational collaboration.

The consensus followed talks in Islamabad between Ethiopian Air Force Chief Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdasa and Pakistan Air Force Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu.

Lt. Gen. Yilma received a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival at the Pakistan Air Force Headquarters, underlining the importance both sides attach to their growing defense partnership. During the discussions, he said Ethiopia’s comprehensive national renewal is anchored not only in economic and political reforms but also in the strategic modernization of its defense forces.

He explained that the effort is guided by three pillars: building skilled human resources, acquiring modern technologies, and creating a military structure capable of addressing today’s security challenges.

The Ethiopian commander also raised the upcoming inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), calling it a symbol of national pride and a foundation for Ethiopia’s vision of regional prosperity and stability. He emphasized that the project will serve not only as a major source of energy but also as a catalyst for regional integration, peace, and shared security in the Horn of Africa.

Lt. Gen. Yilma commended the Pakistan Air Force’s strong operational readiness, advanced multi-domain capabilities, and robust defense systems.

In response, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Sidhu said the visit reflects the strengthening ties between the two nations and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to support Ethiopia’s defense modernization through training, capacity building, and operational cooperation.

He also expressed Pakistan’s readiness to share its experience and to work together on joint exercises and technical assistance, adding that he looks forward to visiting Ethiopia to further deepen the partnership.

As part of the visit, the Ethiopian delegation was briefed on Pakistan’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems, its integrated air operations center, and cyber command, showcasing Islamabad’s advances in modern warfare.

The talks concluded with both sides agreeing to establish a framework to translate their discussions into practical actions.
