Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa Brings Day of Renewal to Life with Free Public Transport

Addis Ababa, September 7, 2026 (FMC) — As Ethiopia observes Pagume 2, the Day of Renewal, Addis Ababa is bringing the spirit of the occasion into the daily lives of residents, providing free public transportation across the capital as part of the day’s activities.

The free service, which began early in the morning and will run for half a day, is being provided through electric vehicles, city buses and the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit, allowing residents to travel across the city without paying fares.

The transport sector, described as one of the visible expressions of Addis Ababa’s ongoing renewal, is taking part in the observance while extending warm New Year wishes to residents as Ethiopia prepares to welcome 2019 E.C.

The initiative comes as the Day of Renewal highlights Ethiopia’s broader efforts to strengthen its economic foundation and advance agriculture, industry, mining, tourism, the digital economy, renewable energy, infrastructure, transport and logistics.

Observed under the overarching theme “Ethiopia’s Renewal,” Pagume 2 connects the closing of the outgoing 2018 E.C. with reflection on the country’s progress and renewed aspirations for the year ahead.
