Ethiopian Diplomatic Missions, Diaspora Worldwide Mark National Flag Day, Reaffirm Commitment to Unity

Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian diplomatic missions across the world have commemorated the 19th National Flag Day, with members of the Ethiopian diaspora joining celebrations in several countries to honor the national flag and reaffirm their commitment to national unity, sovereignty and a shared future.

Observed under the theme “Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity,” the commemorations brought together diplomats, embassy and consular staff, community representatives and Ethiopians living abroad, reflecting a common message that the national flag represents the country’s identity, the sacrifices of previous generations and the collective responsibility to safeguard Ethiopia’s unity and advance its development.

The celebrations spanned Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North America and Australia. Ethiopian missions marked the occasion in Djibouti, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Ghana and Algeria; in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and Russia; and in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Türkiye, Israel, China, the Republic of Korea, Pakistan, India’s wider region, and other locations, including Canberra and Ottawa.

In several locations, Ethiopians in the diaspora joined diplomats and mission staff, underscoring the flag’s significance as a shared national emblem that transcends geographical distance and brings Ethiopians together around a common identity and responsibility.

Messages delivered during the observances emphasized that the flag embodies Ethiopia’s sovereignty, freedom, dignity, patriotism and multinational character.

Speakers recalled the sacrifices made by generations to defend the country’s independence and territorial integrity, calling on the present generation to preserve that legacy by strengthening unity, peace and national consensus.

Diplomatic representatives also linked the day’s message to their responsibilities abroad, stressing the importance of professional public service, protecting Ethiopian citizens’ interests, upholding national dignity and strengthening relations with host countries.

The theme’s emphasis on national consensus featured prominently in the commemorations, with speakers underscoring mutual respect, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of differences as essential to building a united and prosperous country.

They also called on Ethiopians at home and abroad to reinforce shared values and contribute to Ethiopia’s long-term development.

Many of the ceremonies opened with the raising of the national flag accompanied by the national anthem, followed by messages from mission leaders and discussions on patriotism, national responsibility and the significance of the flag.

The worldwide observances extended the National Flag Day celebrations beyond Ethiopia’s borders, bringing diplomatic missions and diaspora communities together around a common symbol and a shared call to strengthen national unity and consensus.
