Ethiopian FM Calls for Sustained Counter‑Terrorism in Somalia and Inclusive Politics in Sudan

Addis Ababa, February 12, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, called for sustained counter-terrorism efforts in Somalia and an inclusive political process in Sudan, emphasizing that the hard-won gains in both countries must be preserved and reinforced.

The meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), of which Ethiopia is a member, is being held today on the margins of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

In his address to the Council, Gedion said the terrorist group Al‑Shabaab continues to pose a serious threat to peace and security in Somalia, noting the “considerable sacrifices” made by Ethiopia and other partner countries in advancing peace and stability in the region.

On Sudan, the Minister stressed the necessity of pursuing an inclusive political process that engages all Sudanese stakeholders “to achieve lasting and sustainable peace” in the country.

Council members held extensive discussions on the prevailing peace and security situation across the continent, with particular focus on developments in Somalia and Sudan.

The AUPSC session is taking place alongside the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, which is convened under the AU’s 2026 theme focused on sustainable water availability, sanitation systems, and advancing continental integration.
