Ethiopian Football Federation Submits Formal Complaint to FIFA After World Cup Qualifier Against Egypt

Addis Ababa, September 8, 2025 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) announced this evening that it has formally submitted a complaint to FIFA following Friday night’s FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Egypt, in which Egypt claimed a 2-0 win thanks to two controversial penalties from Mohammed Salah and Omar Marmoush.

In its statement, the EFF raised two major concerns. First, Ethiopian players, particularly the goalkeeper, were reportedly targeted with laser pointers by spectators during critical moments of the match, including the two penalty kicks. The federation said this behavior disrupted players’ concentration and violated FIFA Stadium Safety and Security Regulations as well as the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which prohibits the use of laser devices in stadiums.

Second, the EFF highlighted disrespect shown toward the Ethiopian national anthem, citing whistles, jeers, and other disruptive actions by supporters of the host nation. The federation said this behavior contravenes FIFA’s disciplinary regulations and the principles of fair play and mutual respect among national teams.

The EFF requested that FIFA initiate a formal investigation, hold the Egyptian Football Association accountable for the misconduct of its supporters, and implement corrective measures and sanctions as needed to safeguard the integrity of future matches. The federation also urged FIFA to take steps to educate host federations and their supporters on proper conduct during pre-match ceremonies such as national anthems.

Signed by EFF Chief Executive Officer Bahiru Tilahun, the statement emphasized that the federation trusts FIFA to treat the matter with urgency and seriousness, ensuring safe, respectful, and fair competition for all member associations.
