Ethiopian Minister Calls African Youth ‘Change-Makers of Today’ at Climate Assembly

Addis Ababa, September 5, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa, delivered a powerful call to action at the opening of the African Youth Climate Assembly (AYCA) 2025, urging Africa’s young generation to embrace their role as the driving force of climate solutions.

Speaking at the historic Adwa Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, Fitsum declared that Africa’s youth are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but the change-makers of today. Her speech, centered on the theme of youth leadership in addressing climate change, set the tone for the assembly, which serves as a precursor to the Africa Climate Summit.

The Minister emphasized that AYCA is not simply a gathering, but a movement where young Africans are already showcasing extraordinary leadership. She highlighted their efforts in innovating clean energy solutions, reimagining climate-smart agriculture, pioneering green businesses, and mobilizing communities. She noted that these initiatives are rewriting Africa’s story by proving that resilience and innovation are deeply embedded in the continent’s identity.

Fitsum underlined the crucial role of young people in shaping Africa’s climate future, stressing that the ideas and commitments emerging from the assembly will directly inform the Africa Climate Summit and influence continental strategies. This, she said, would ensure Africa’s voice on the global stage is one of passion, creativity, and determination.

She also drew a powerful parallel between the Battle of Adwa—an enduring symbol of unity and resilience—and the current struggle against climate change. Just as Africans once came together to defend their freedom, she urged today’s youth to summon the same spirit of unity and courage to build a greener, safer, and more prosperous Africa.

Concluding her address, the Minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to working with African nations, global partners, and the continent’s young generation to accelerate just, inclusive, and transformative climate solutions.
