Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives has re-elected Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister and sworn him in for a second five-year term, formally entrusting him with the leadership of the federal government as the country’s 7th parliamentary term gets underway.
During the inaugural proceedings of the first working year of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh, representing the ruling Prosperity Party, presented Abiy Ahmed as the party’s nominee to serve as Prime Minister for a five-year term.
The House subsequently unanimously endorsed his nomination, re-electing Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister. He then took the constitutional oath of office, formally assuming his mandate for the new governmental term.
The swearing-in took place in the presence of President Taye Atske-Selassie, senior government officials and invited guests, marking a central constitutional step in the formal formation of the new Medemer Government.
Abiy Ahmed’s re-election follows the June 1, 2026 General Election and marks the transition of the electoral mandate into a new five-year cycle of executive governance under the newly constituted Parliament.
