Addis Ababa, August 2, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said national transformation requires active participation from those seeking change, stressing that lasting progress cannot be achieved through distance or observation alone.
In an interview with Amhara Media Corporation (AMECO), the Prime Minister said individuals and groups with genuine concerns should engage closely, ask questions, and work together in advancing Ethiopia’s overall development.
Addressing the role of the diaspora community, Prime Minister Abiy said some members changed their positions during the reform process after reassessing their expectations and understanding that transformation was not the outcome of the efforts of individuals alone.
He explained that some initially viewed themselves as the sole initiators, leaders, or owners of the change process. However, he said they later recognized that the reform was driven by the efforts, participation, and sacrifices of many Ethiopians.
The Prime Minister also cited different reasons behind shifts in positions among some diaspora members, including what he described as miscalculations about the direction of the reform, expectations of controlling its course, and cases where opposition became a means of seeking attention or economic benefit.
At the same time, he acknowledged that some individuals changed their stance because they had genuine questions and believed their concerns had not received adequate responses.
Prime Minister Abiy said those with legitimate concerns should come closer, observe developments, engage through dialogue, and contribute to the country’s progress.
He stressed that change is not a one-time event but a continuous process that requires patience, self-reflection, learning, and adjustment.
“Change does not succeed by standing on the sidelines; it requires participation,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing the importance of constructive engagement in shaping Ethiopia’s future.
