Addis Ababa, October 20, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has emphasized the shared history of courage and sacrifice between Ethiopia and Kenya, linking Ethiopia’s historic victory at Adwa with Kenya’s struggle for freedom and calling for stronger cooperation to advance shared prosperity.
In a social media post following his participation in Mashujaa Day in Eldoret, Kenya, the Prime Minister said he had delivered remarks paying tribute to the heroes who fought for freedom and those who made the ultimate sacrifices to safeguard their nation.
He honored their courage and legacy, noting that Kenya’s history of courage and sacrifice resonates deeply with Ethiopia’s own story of Adwa, where Ethiopians from every corner of the country united to defend their homeland.
“These shared histories remind us that freedom was never given; it was won through courage, unity, and sacrifice,” he stated.
The Prime Minister said the intertwined histories of the two countries should also be reflected in their future, underscoring the spirit of Medemer as a basis for advancing their partnership.
He stressed that Ethiopia and Kenya must continue building on their existing cooperation in clean energy, connectivity, telecommunications and trade to create greater opportunities and shared prosperity for their peoples.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister saluted those honored during the celebrations and extended his wishes to Kenya on Mashujaa Day.
