Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (FMC) — Millions of Ethiopians from all walks of life are planting 800 million tree seedlings across the country today in a remarkable display of unity in purpose and action, Government Communication Service Minister Enatalem Meles said.
In a statement marking the historic one-day nationwide Green Legacy campaign, Enatalem Meles said millions of Ethiopians are planting 800 million seedlings through unity of purpose and action, describing the effort as a powerful demonstration of the country’s collective commitment to restoring degraded landscapes.
She said the day represents far more than a mass tree-planting exercise, noting that hundreds of millions of seedlings taking root across the country symbolize #Ethiopia’s determination to heal degraded land and build a greener future through shared responsibility.
According to Enatalem Meles, Ethiopia has planned to plant 8 billion seedlings during this year’s rainy season, with today’s nationwide campaign serving as a major milestone toward achieving that target.
She said the country’s decision to take its Green Legacy to the ground stems from the need to rehabilitate degraded, barren and environmentally damaged land, stressing that the initiative is being carried out through unity in both thought and action.
Ms. Enatalem emphasized that the Green Legacy Initiative is founded on the belief that restoring damaged ecosystems requires collective action, calling on Ethiopians to work together to heal the country’s degraded landscapes and leave a lasting environmental legacy for future generations.
Millions of Ethiopians from all walks of life are participating in the nationwide campaign, planting seedlings across the country as part of the Green Legacy Initiative, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other senior federal and regional officials also joining planting activities at various locations throughout the day.
