Addis Ababa, June 15, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s dignified and principled approach to hosting refugees is not only strengthening its international standing but also contributing to regional peace, people-to-people ties, and economic integration, according to Refugees and Returnees Service Director-General Teyba Hassen.
Speaking on the country’s long-standing commitment to refugee protection, Teyba noted that Ethiopia currently hosts approximately 1.2 million refugees—making it the second-largest host in Africa and the seventh globally.
Most of these refugees originate from neighboring countries with deep linguistic and cultural affinities to the communities that host them, facilitating smoother integration and mutual understanding.
Teyba highlighted Ethiopia’s adherence to international laws and standards as a cornerstone of its refugee policy, underscoring the country’s global recognition for its progressive and humane approach.
“Refugees in Ethiopia primarily live within local communities and benefit from a range of opportunities, including access to employment and the freedom to reside outside designated camps,” she said. “Their living conditions are significantly better compared to many other host nations.”
She emphasized that the Ethiopian government remains committed to hosting refugees with dignity and compassion, a commitment further reinforced by the Ethiopian people’s deeply rooted traditions of hospitality and solidarity.
Furthermore, Ethiopia’s efforts to care for and integrate refugees are helping to build bridges across borders, fostering stability, cooperation, and long-term regional development.
“This inclusive approach strengthens people-to-people relations, encourages peacebuilding, and promotes regional integration,” Teyba told ENA. “As a leading nation in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia has taken on the vital responsibility of supporting neighboring countries and welcoming asylum seekers—always in accordance with international standards and with a strong focus on sustainable solutions.”
