Ethiopia’s New Medemer Government

Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is entering a new political and parliamentary chapter today as the new Medemer Government is formally established following the seventh general election held on June 1, 2026.

More than 54 million Ethiopians took part in the election, in which 42 political parties competed for seats in the federal and regional legislative bodies. The National Election Board of Ethiopia subsequently announced that the Prosperity Party won 438 seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, securing the parliamentary majority required to form the federal government.

Following the election outcome and the mandate obtained from voters, the Prosperity Party is set to formally establish the new Medemer Government today, October 5.

Meanwhile, the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation are set to begin the seventh parliamentary term today. The two Houses will hold their respective first regular sessions of the new term and a joint opening session.

The developments mark the formal beginning of the country’s new parliamentary term and the new federal government following the June 1 election.
