Addis Ababa, October 8, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s new ministerial Cabinet has marked a historic first with the appointment of Mohammed Abdurahman, from Harari Region, as Minister of Urban and Infrastructure, bringing the region into Ethiopia’s federal executive at ministerial level for the first time.
The milestone forms part of the new 23-member ministerial Cabinet, comprising 22 ministers approved by the House of Peoples’ Representatives and Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh. The newly appointed ministers have taken their constitutional oath of office before the House.
Mohammed Abdurahman’s appointment marks the first time Harari Region has secured representation at ministerial level in Ethiopia’s federal government, adding a new dimension to regional representation within the national executive.
The new Cabinet takes office as Ethiopia begins a new five-year governmental chapter following the opening of the 7th parliamentary term on October 5, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s re-election and his subsequent swearing-in for another five-year term.
The Cabinet brings together leadership across key areas of governance and national development, including foreign affairs, defense, finance, agriculture, education, industry, health, trade and regional integration, water and energy, innovation and technology, infrastructure, peace, mining, logistics, culture and tourism, irrigation and lowlands, and youth and sports.
With parliamentary approval and the constitutional oath completed, the new ministerial Cabinet has formally assumed office as part of the federal executive of the Medemer Government.
