Ethiopia’s Parliament Pledges to Turn National Dialogue Recommendations into Action and Law

Addis Ababa, October 23, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives will work intensively to ensure that recommendations emerging from the country’s National Dialogue are implemented and that proposals requiring legislation are translated into law, Speaker Ahmed Shide has affirmed.

The Speaker made the commitment during a recognition and appreciation ceremony organized by the House for commissioners of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, acknowledging their work in facilitating a nationwide process aimed at addressing longstanding national challenges through dialogue and consensus.

Speaker Ahmed said the National Dialogue had achieved significant results by demonstrating that problems Ethiopia has grappled with for decades can be addressed through consultation, mutual understanding and agreement. He noted that approximately 4,000 Ethiopians had taken part in the deliberations, laying a foundation for nation-building and contributing to the development of a more mature political system.

He reaffirmed that the House had fulfilled its responsibilities from the establishment of the National Dialogue Commission through legislation to supporting the successful conduct of its work. The next priority, he stressed, is to translate the recommendations into practical outcomes and ensure that proposals requiring legal measures are enacted and implemented.

The Speaker’s pledge places the implementation of the dialogue’s outcomes at the center of the next phase of the process, linking nationwide consultation with concrete institutional and legislative action.

Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, Mesfin Araya, said serving Ethiopia was an honor and expressed appreciation for the recognition accorded to the Commission.

He explained that the Commission had pursued an inclusive process to make the dialogue successful, adding that the initiative had also received international recognition. He underscored the need to strengthen the role of stakeholders in ensuring that the recommendations identified through the dialogue are put into practice.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Government Chief Whip at the House of Peoples’ Representatives Fikadu Tesema, members of parliament, National Dialogue Commission commissioners and invited guests.
