Addis Ababa, April 19, 2026 (FMC) — The International Monetary Fund has expressed strong support for Ethiopia’s economic reform agenda as the country continues to navigate a challenging global environment.
The reaffirmation came during a meeting on the margins of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., between Ethiopia’s delegation led by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
During the discussions, the Ethiopian delegation briefed the IMF on progress under the Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, noting sustained implementation despite external pressures, including spillover effects linked to developments in the Middle East.
The talks also reviewed macroeconomic developments, highlighting strong growth, easing inflation, and improvements in fiscal and external balances, while acknowledging intensifying global pressures such as supply chain disruptions and rising fuel and fertilizer costs.
The delegation emphasized the importance of timely and predictable international support at scale to help address current challenges while sustaining reform efforts and advancing longer-term priorities, including climate resilience.
The IMF, for its part, commended the progress achieved and reaffirmed its readiness to provide continued and coordinated support, in collaboration with the World Bank, to help meet Ethiopia’s near-term financing needs and sustain reform momentum.
