Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party and Communist Party of Cuba reaffirm strong partnership

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2025 (FMC) — The Prosperity Party of Ethiopia and the Communist Party of Cuba have reaffirmed their longstanding partnership, vowing to deepen cooperation in political, economic, and social spheres during a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa.

The Cuban delegation, led by Ferdinand Gonzales Llort, President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and member of the Cuban Parliament, was accompanied by Cuba’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Meylin Suarez Alvarez. They were received at the Prosperity Party headquarters by Bikila Hurissa, Head of Public and International Relations.

During the discussions, the Cuban side congratulated Ethiopia on the successful completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and extended New Year greetings to the Ethiopian people. The GERD was described as a symbol of self-reliance and a model of national determination with lessons for Africa and the wider world.

Both parties underlined the historical fraternity between Ethiopia and Cuba and agreed to expand cooperation through party-to-party, government-to-government, and people-to-people channels. They emphasized the need to formalize ties through memoranda of understanding and strategic alliances, while also exploring new areas of collaboration.

The meeting also addressed the impact of unilateral sanctions on Cuba. The Prosperity Party expressed solidarity, calling the measures an “economic war on people” that undermines the country’s sovereign rights. Cuba’s resilience in the face of external pressure was highlighted as an example of national pride and independence.

The two sides further stressed that in today’s multipolar world, global challenges must be met with fairness, dialogue, and cooperation rather than intimidation.

They committed to strengthening exchanges and launching joint initiatives to deepen political, social, and economic ties between the two nations and their ruling parties.
