Ethiopia’s Upper House Speaker calls for full implementation of national plans to advance renewal agenda

Addis Ababa, August 19, 2025 (FMC) — Speaker of the FDRE House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager, has urged Ethiopia’s institutions and leaders to place the highest priority on implementing national development plans as the country enters the 2025/26 fiscal year, a period he described as decisive in Ethiopia’s journey of renewal.

Mr. Agegnehu underscored that Ethiopia’s economic, social, and political ambitions must be pursued with focus and determination, stressing the need to turn challenges into opportunities while building on the progress already achieved.

He noted that the upcoming fiscal year coincides with the conclusion of the 6th parliamentary term, a moment when the nation will assess the results of its strategic plans and prepare for the transition into the 7th parliamentary term.

“This is a year to correct shortcomings, to strike a fair balance across the economic, social, and political spheres, and to ensure Ethiopia enters the next parliamentary term on stronger ground,” the Speaker said.

He further emphasized the importance of broad-based dialogue and consensus on key national agendas, describing national consensus as the cornerstone of unity and a critical pillar for strengthening Ethiopia’s democratic system.

The House of Federation, he said, must be fully supported to carry out its role in advancing these objectives.

Reflecting on the past year, Agegnehu highlighted that the 2024/25 fiscal year had seen significant efforts to improve citizens’ wellbeing and consolidate the constitutional responsibilities of the Upper House. He stressed that this performance has laid the groundwork for further progress in the year ahead.

During the session, the House of Federation reviewed the 2024/25 annual performance report and endorsed its plan for the 2025/26 fiscal year.

The Speaker also issued directives and work guidelines for the Ethiopian Upper House moving forward.

Mr. Terefe Bedada, Director of Communication and Public Relations at the House of Federation, told Fana Digital that Agegnehu called on senior officials of the Upper House to strengthen their contributions by delivering research-driven, professional services that can better inform policy decisions and legislative priorities.
