Ethiopia’s wheat dev’t success sets a continental example, says former Nigerian President

Addis Ababa, June 27, 2025 (FMC) — Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has praised Ethiopia’s transformation from wheat importer to exporter, calling it a model for Africa’s agricultural advancement.

Speaking at the 32nd Annual Meeting of Afreximbank in Abuja, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of competent leadership and strategic policy in driving inclusive growth. He urged African nations to emulate Ethiopia’s success, demonstrating that agricultural self-sufficiency and economic progress are achievable through visionary leadership.

Obasanjo highlighted the need for a continental agricultural revolution to address food security and reduce import dependence. Ethiopia’s wheat export capacity offers a blueprint for other countries.

He stressed that intra-African trade remains underdeveloped despite the continent’s abundant resources, urging stronger economic ties and the use of local currencies to enhance resilience. Uganda’s growing milk exports to Nigeria exemplify the potential of cross-border trade to ease shortages and stimulate growth.

In a stirring call to action, Obasanjo said: “Let us learn from ourselves and among ourselves. And let us then get the lions to move, and when the lions move, the cubs will follow.” He insisted that Africa’s future depends on African ideas, solutions, and resolve—not just reclaiming past glories but building a greater future.

Obasanjo concluded that effective leadership, grounded in an understanding of local realities and sound policies, can lead Africa’s renaissance and improve millions of lives.

Ethiopia’s wheat production success is the result of a focused national initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government over the past six years. Through strategic investments, improved farming techniques, and coordinated policy support, Ethiopia has moved from wheat importer to exporter, showcasing a transformative agricultural achievement that aligns with the country’s broader economic development goals.

In recognition of these efforts, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was awarded the prestigious FAO Agricola Medal in January 2024. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization honored him for his vision, leadership, and commitment to food security and nutrition, particularly in advancing wheat self-sufficiency amidst challenging circumstances. This accolade underscores Ethiopia’s significant strides in transforming its agricultural sector and serves as a testament to the nation’s dedication to achieving food sovereignty.
