Addis Ababa, November 19, 2025 (FMC) – The partnership between the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) is built on shared values and aspirations, anchored in trust and a collective drive for peace, progress, and prosperity, EU Ambassador to the African Union Javier Nino Perez said.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the seventh EU-AU Summit, scheduled for November 24-25 in Luanda, Ambassador Perez highlighted the growth and deepening of cooperation between the two continents over the past 25 years.
*”As we look forward to the 7th AU-EU Summit, we not only celebrate a significant milestone in our shared history but also the dynamic cooperation that binds our peoples, private sectors, civil societies, and youth,”* he stated.
The ambassador noted that the shared values between Africa and Europe are shaped by geography, history, and a mutual vision for the future. He reaffirmed that the EU remains Africa’s closest ally, serving as the continent’s largest trading partner, primary investor, key contributor to peace and security, and main provider of development and humanitarian aid.
The upcoming summit, he said, will underscore the EU-AU commitment to peace and security, prosperity, and multilateralism. It will also focus on creating sustainable growth and opportunities, particularly for Africa’s youth, a critical demographic, while promoting a rules-based international order and ensuring a united African voice on the global stage.
Highlighting 25 years of partnership, Perez emphasized the importance of continuing to nurture an alliance grounded in trust and a shared ambition for peace, progress, and prosperity for both regions.
EU Ambassador to Ethiopia Sofie From-Emmesberger also spoke on the EU’s multifaceted partnership with Ethiopia. She outlined the EU’s commitment to supporting key sectors including energy, agribusiness, and digitization, while extending cooperation to health, governance, and vocational training.
*”The EU-Ethiopia partnership is deep and multifaceted,”* she said, underscoring ongoing initiatives like the Danish 100 MW Assela Wind Farm under the Global Gateway program, designed to support Ethiopia’s energy transition.
She further highlighted the importance of academic exchange, noting Ethiopian universities that facilitate student study opportunities in Europe through Erasmus programs.
From-Emmesberger reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to remaining a reliable, long-term partner in Ethiopia’s development and cooperation efforts.
