Addis Ababa, June 27, 2026 (FMC) — The European Union Delegation to Ethiopia has condemned the former TPLF’s alleged forced military conscription and the removal of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration, stating that the actions constitute a violation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA).
In a statement, the Delegation expressed concern over developments in northern Ethiopia, including the ousting of the Interim Regional Administration, a transitional authority established under the Pretoria Peace Agreement, and reported forced military recruitment activities attributed to the group now operating in the region.
The EU said these actions are inconsistent with the provisions of the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, which provides the framework for ending hostilities and restoring legitimate governance structures in Tigray region.
It called for the urgent resumption of talks among all parties on the full implementation of the agreement, stressing the need for sustained dialogue to preserve peace and stability.
The EU also reaffirmed its support for African Union-led mediation efforts under the High Representative and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
It is known that the United States has imposed visa restrictions on individuals described as hardline members linked to the former TPLF and their immediate families, citing concerns over actions deemed to undermine the peace process and the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.
