Expanding Best Practices Key to Accelerating Inclusive Prosperity – Southwest Ethiopia Region Chief

Addis Ababa, January 20, 2026 (FMC) — Chief Administrator of the Southwest Ethiopia People’s Regional State, Negash Wagesho (PhD), said accelerating the region’s journey toward inclusive prosperity requires scaling up proven development models that deliver tangible family and social benefits.

He made the remarks during the inauguration of the Denbi Eco Lodge in Benchi Sheko Zone of the Southwest Ethiopia People’s Regional State, which was officially inaugurated recently by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).

Speaking at the event, Negash Wagesho said the Medemer-led government has, over the years, implemented a wide range of development initiatives aimed at ensuring broad-based benefits for citizens. He noted that these efforts have contributed to strengthening Ethiopia’s image and presence on the global stage.

He emphasized that sustained efforts are underway to transform the lives of citizens by effectively harnessing the country’s natural resources and human potential for development, adding that comprehensive measures are being taken to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth.

The Chief Administrator further stated that the establishment of a clear national vision, coupled with a leadership system capable of translating ideas into action, has enabled the completion of major infrastructure projects that directly serve the public and are now operational.

Recalling the situation prior to recent reforms, he said the Southwest Ethiopia region had long been excluded from the government’s development agenda, but has now begun to witness the long-awaited transformation. He added that previously untapped natural and social resources are being identified, developed, and converted into economic and tourism assets.

As examples, he cited the Halala Eco Lodge, Chebera Elephant Paw Eco Lodge, Denbi Eco Lodge, and the Mizan Aman Airport development projects as initiatives that are unlocking the region’s tourism and investment potential.

Negash Wagesho also recalled that following the discontinuation of the former Denbi hydropower plant for various reasons, the lake and surrounding infrastructure had remained unused for years. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his leadership for their decisive role in revitalizing the area and ensuring that natural resources, including the Denbi Eco Lodge, are developed in partnership with local communities.

He further noted that the government’s development approach places strong emphasis on equity and inclusiveness, adding that the Office of the First Lady has provided budgetary support to the region to expand access to education in pastoralist areas.

In addition, he said the Model Rural Village established in Kuja Kebele of Gura Ferda Woreda has enabled disadvantaged communities to experience improved and modern rural living conditions.
