Addis Ababa, June 8, 2026 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Federal Police (EFP) has significantly strengthened its institutional capacity through wide-ranging reforms, enabling it to effectively respond to evolving security challenges and combat increasingly sophisticated crimes, Commissioner General Demelash Gebre-Michael has said.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Fana Media Corporation (FMC), Commissioner General Demelash said the reforms undertaken since the current reform-oriented government assumed office have transformed the Federal Police into a modern institution capable of addressing emerging security threats while keeping pace with rapid technological advancements.
He noted that the institution has reinforced its crime prevention and investigation capabilities, allowing it to respond more effectively to the country’s changing security landscape and the growing challenges posed by the digital era.
The Commissioner General said the Federal Police is working in a manner that reflects Ethiopia’s history and national dignity while adapting to the country’s evolving security needs. He added that the institution has also registered notable achievements in combating international and transnational crimes.
Among its key accomplishments, Demelash cited the Federal Police’s efforts to curb illegal human trafficking, noting that numerous suspects involved in trafficking networks operating along various routes have been apprehended and brought before the courts.
He said the institution is intensifying efforts to identify areas vulnerable to human trafficking and dismantle criminal networks responsible for the crime, which continues to endanger the lives of many Ethiopians.
According to the Commissioner General, the Federal Police’s sustained efforts to combat illegal human trafficking have earned recognition from various international institutions. He added that the institution is also playing an active role in addressing cross-border and transnational crimes through strengthened cooperation with international law enforcement partners.
Despite the growing sophistication of criminal activities driven by technological advances, Demelash said the Federal Police continues to enhance its operational capabilities and modernize its systems to ensure it remains effective in responding to emerging security challenges in a timely manner.
