Fertilizer, oil refinery and airport mega projects mark a new era of economic growth in Ethiopia, PM Abiy says

Addis Ababa, October 28, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) stated that Ethiopia’s strategic mega projects are reshaping the nation’s economic landscape and setting the foundation for future generations.

He responded to lawmakers’ questions during second regular session of the House of People’s Representatives today, highlighting national achievements in energy, industrial development, and infrastructure.

Highlighting economic matters, the Prime Minister emphasized that the Ogaden Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project – Phase 2, located in Calub, Somali region, will add 1.33 billion liters per year to national gas production, building on the Phase 1 facility inaugurated last month with a capacity of 111 million liters annually.

PM Abiy also highlighted the urea fertilizer project in Gode, to be developed by Ethiopian Investment Holdings in partnership with the Dangote Group, which will produce 3 million tons of fertilizer per year. He said this project is expected to double agricultural productivity and support import substitution efforts.

The oil refinery project, constructed by Golden Concord Group Limited (GCL) in Gode, is set to produce 3.5 million tons of oil annually, further enhancing Ethiopia’s industrial and energy capacities.

On aviation infrastructure, Abiy noted the USD 10 billion Ethiopian Airlines mega airport in Bishoftu, which will handle over 100 million passengers annually, positioning Ethiopia as Africa’s leading aviation hub and significantly strengthening the country’s global connectivity.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s confirmed 21 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, emphasizing the need to harness these resources for industrialization, energy generation, and long-term economic growth.

“These projects in gas, fertilizer, oil, and aviation are truly transformative,” PM Abiy said. “By producing fertilizer domestically, agricultural productivity can at least double. Once all these projects are completed, they will bring significant and lasting change to Ethiopia’s economic landscape and positively shape the future of our country and generations to come.”

Prime Minister Abiy further linked these projects to Ethiopia’s broader Homegrown Economic Reform (HGER) agenda, noting that such initiatives are essential for sustaining economic growth, attracting investment, and ensuring that the nation continues to achieve high-impact industrial and infrastructural milestones.
