Addis Ababa, January 14, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, met today with President Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Republic of South Sudan in Juba, where he conveyed a special message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The meeting covered key bilateral and regional matters, with both sides reaffirming the longstanding partnership and shared interests between Ethiopia and South Sudan. They underscored the need to further strengthen cooperation and enhance coordination on issues of mutual concern.
Particular focus was given to expanding economic ties—especially in trade, investment and infrastructure connectivity—including road and power networks—to support development and improve the well-being of the peoples of both countries.
The discussions highlighted a continued commitment to advancing regional stability, integration and sustainable development through closer collaboration.
Prior to his meeting with President Salva Kiir, FM Gedion also held discussions with South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Monday Kumba.
In their talks, the two sides reviewed bilateral and regional developments, reaffirming the strong and historic relations between Ethiopia and South Sudan.
They emphasized the importance of deepening economic integration, particularly in trade, investment and major cross-border infrastructure initiatives, including interconnected transport and energy systems.
The Ministers also agreed to strengthen cooperation in human capital development through enhanced educational exchanges and institutional capacity-building efforts.
