French Army Chief: Ethiopia Should Be Integrated into International Trade Routes

Addis Ababa, November 29, 2025 (FMC) – French Land Forces Commander General Pierre Schill said Ethiopia, given its size, economic potential, and population, should be integrated into international trade routes to enhance trade and investment opportunities.

During his recent visit to Ethiopia, General Schill consulted with Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) Generals on bilateral military cooperation and toured several ENDF institutions. He also held discussions with the Chief of the General Staff of the ENDF, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula.

In an interview with the ENDF online media team, General Schill emphasized Ethiopia’s strategic importance and economic capacity, noting that its inclusion in international trade routes would significantly benefit the country.

He added that France supports Ethiopia’s initiative in this regard and highlighted that various multilateral organizations, including the United Nations, are also backing the East African country’s efforts.

The French commander further expressed France’s intention to deepen military cooperation with Ethiopia.

He further confirmed that his visit to Addis Ababa is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration in areas such as military equipment support, peacekeeping operations, mine clearance, personnel training, and other military activities.

General Schill described Ethiopia as a key actor in maintaining security in the Horn of Africa, stressing that its active engagement is critical for regional stability.

He also praised the Ethiopian army, noting its many admirable qualities and describing it as a force where valuable lessons are continuously learned, the ENDF online media team told Fana Media Corporation.
