From the Mountains of Adwa to Guba, Honouring Adwa in Its Full Glory

Addis Ababa, March 2, 2026 (FMC) — The Office of the Prime Minister stated that the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa serves as a reminder of Ethiopia’s historical determination to shape its own destiny and future.

In a message shared on social media, the Office emphasized that the Adwa victory was more than a battlefield achievement; it represented a declaration of sovereignty and self-determination. The statement noted that honoring the sacrifices of past generations requires building contemporary achievements and advancing national development rather than relying solely on historical memory.

The message highlighted the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as a modern symbol of national progress and strategic development, describing it as a “Second Adwa” that demonstrates Ethiopia’s capacity to realize large-scale objectives through collective effort. According to the statement, the dam embodies the principle of honoring historical legacy by addressing present-day challenges and opportunities.

The Office underscored that unity and shared purpose are essential to national success, stating that the spirit of Adwa—rooted in cooperation and determination—remains relevant in contemporary nation-building. It described this spirit as an expression of Medemer, a concept emphasizing synergy and collective advancement.

The message concluded by reaffirming Ethiopia’s historical achievements and future potential. “We were great and we shall be even greater,” it stated, reflecting confidence in the country’s capacity to achieve sustained progress through unity and strategic development.

The 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa is being commemorated nationwide under the theme “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon,” highlighting the enduring significance of the historic triumph and its lessons for modern development and national cohesion.
