Gedion Timothewos Reappointed as Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister for Second Term

Addis Ababa, October 8, 2026 (FMC) — Gedion Timothewos has been reappointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for a second term, continuing to lead the country’s diplomatic affairs as the new government begins its five-year mandate.

Gedion took the constitutional oath of office before the House of Peoples’ Representatives today alongside the other newly appointed ministers, formally assuming his responsibilities for the new term.

His reappointment brings continuity to the leadership of Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry following his service in the same capacity during the previous governmental term.

He now begins his second term as Ethiopia’s chief diplomat at a time of sustained engagement with neighboring countries, Africa’s continental institutions and partners across the wider international community.

The continuation of Gedion at the helm of the Foreign Ministry comes as the new government embarks on its foreign-policy agenda following the June 1, 2026 general election and the opening of the 7th parliamentary term.

His reappointment forms part of the constitution of the new Medemer Government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was re-elected for another five-year term and sworn into office on October 5.

With his oath before Parliament, Gedion has formally assumed his second mandate as Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, taking forward the country’s diplomatic responsibilities into the new governmental term.
