Addis Ababa, September 22, 2025 (FMC) – Leaders from Harari and Dire Dawa have hailed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a symbol of Ethiopia’s revival, national unity, and collective achievement, highlighting its broader significance for the African continent.
Mass rallies were held in Dire Dawa and Harar this morning to celebrate the inauguration of the “People’s Project” and to showcase support to the government’s development efforts. The mass rallies drew thousands of residents from all walks of life.
During a mass rally in Harari Regional State under the theme “We Did It in Unity”, Deputy Chief Administrator Ms. Roza Oumer described GERD as “a bright story of victory for the Black people after Adwa,” realized through the collective effort, sweat, and sacrifice of Ethiopians. She emphasized that the dam, which overcame numerous complex challenges, embodies Ethiopia’s renewal and spiritual resilience.
Ms. Roza further highlighted that completing the project independently, without foreign loans or external support, proves that Ethiopians can successfully undertake major initiatives when working together.
In Dire Dawa, Mayor Mr. Kedir Juhar addressed citizens at a public rally in the city stadium, calling GERD “the answer to the long-standing grievances of Ethiopians” and likening it to a second Adwa. He emphasized the project’s demonstration of national cooperation and unity.
“The success of the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has shown the light that economic independence can be ensured not only for us but also for the rest of our African brothers,” Mayor Kedir said.
He also stressed that the collaborative spirit demonstrated in constructing GERD should guide future national projects and highlighted the dam’s role in expanding domestic energy access and strengthening regional energy connectivity.
Mr. Getu Weyesa, head of the Harari Regional Branch of the Prosperity Party, expressed gratitude for the public support rallies following GERD’s completion, noting the active participation of citizens in celebrating this landmark achievement.
