Addis Ababa, September 1, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will be open to all Ethiopians within the next week to 15 days, allowing the public to witness firsthand the culmination of the nation’s efforts.
Speaking at the GERD site during a special discussion with his Social Affairs Advisor Deacon Daniel Kibret, PM Abiy described the dam as a symbol of Ethiopia’s revival and transformation.
“This project is not only economically beneficial but also a major milestone for Ethiopia’s national pride and dreams,” he said, noting that its completion has reshaped the country’s geopolitical and cultural narrative.
He emphasized the dam’s significance beyond power generation, explaining that it showcases Ethiopia’s ability to harness the Abbay River’s resources responsibly.
Visitors will see how the current generation has overcome challenges that have hindered Ethiopia for centuries, he said, highlighting the infrastructure prepared for guests, including an airport and over 100 accommodation villas.
The Prime Minister also reflected on the historical context, recalling the efforts of previous generations to utilize the Abbay River. While earlier attempts were hindered by financial, technical, and geopolitical constraints, Ethiopia’s strengthened position enabled the project’s realization.
PM Abiy stressed that GERD exemplifies national resilience, the power of coordinated effort, and the potential for Ethiopia to lead in regional development.
“This is a project that demonstrates how, with discipline, determination, and collaboration, Ethiopians can achieve remarkable feats,” he said, inviting citizens from all regions to experience the dam, understand its strategic importance, and draw inspiration for future national initiatives.
