GERD’s Lake Nigat Seen as a Source of Lasting Economic and Environmental Benefits for Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, October 14, 2025 (FMC) – The Ministry of Water and Energy has underscored that the artificial Lake Nigat, formed by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), is becoming a major source of economic, social, and environmental benefits for Ethiopia and the wider region.

During a stakeholder consultation held in Bishoftu town on the draft master plan for Lake Nigat, Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa noted that the lake—now recognized as the fourth largest in Africa—represents a transformative national asset created through the collective determination of Ethiopians.

He emphasized that the generation that built GERD had turned the mighty Abbay River into a symbol of pride and resilience for the nation.

According to the Minister, the significance of the dam extends far beyond power generation.

The Lake Nigat, which spans more than 74 billion cubic meters of water and hosts over 70 islands, has opened vast opportunities for economic growth, employment creation, and regional cooperation, it was stated.

The Minister added that the lake’s development potential covers a wide range of sectors, including fisheries, water transport, and tourism, all of which require coordinated and well-planned management.

He further indicated that the draft master plan for Lake Nigat is being prepared to harness these opportunities in a sustainable and integrated manner.

The plan, he said, aims to guide investment, ensure environmental protection, and maximize the lake’s contribution to national development.

Habtamu also called on stakeholders to provide the necessary resources and expertise to finalize the plan effectively.

Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State Deputy Chief Administrator Getahun Abdisa, who attended the consultation, told Fana Media Corporation that fish farming activities around the lake have already created income and employment for local youth.

He noted that the upcoming master plan will help unlock the full potential of Lake Nigat by encouraging further investment in fisheries, tourism, and transport infrastructure.

Participants of the consultation agreed that Lake Nigat has emerged as one of Ethiopia’s most valuable resources—both as a product of national unity and as a driver of future prosperity.

The master plan, once completed, is expected to ensure that the blessings of the lake continue to serve the Ethiopian people for generations to come.
