German State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth Praises Ethiopia as Africa’s Model for Climate Innovation and Green Growth

Addis Ababa, September 8, 2025 (FMC) — German State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth has commended Ethiopia for its leadership in renewable energy and climate resilience, describing the country as a model for Africa during a reception hosted last night at the German Embassy in Addis Ababa.

The event, organized on the eve of the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), brought together civil society representatives and key continental voices to discuss climate action and sustainable development.

Flasbarth emphasized the urgency of scaling adaptation measures across the continent, stating, “Africa is concentrating on its own role, making its voice heard in global climate talks, and it deserves to.

Ethiopia and its partners exemplify how sustainable investments and innovative ideas can drive progress in renewable energy and climate resilience across Africa.”

Bärbel Kofler, State Secretary at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, also praised Ethiopia’s achievements in solar, hydropower, geothermal, and wind power.

She noted that these initiatives are fostering sustainable rural development while strengthening Africa’s broader climate action agenda. “Ethiopia is at the forefront of Africa’s green transition, demonstrating how ambition can translate into practical, impactful solutions,” Kofler said, reaffirming Germany’s strong partnership with Ethiopia in addressing climate challenges.

Ferdinand von Weyhe, Germany’s Acting Ambassador to Ethiopia, highlighted the country’s strategic importance as Africa’s political and developmental hub. He underscored Ethiopia’s efforts in renewable energy and urban climate adaptation, including the promotion of electric mobility in Addis Ababa.

Stephan Hoch, Managing Director of Perspectives Climate Group, drew attention to the critical role of carbon markets and international cooperation in accelerating Africa’s climate efforts. He commended Ethiopian communities and civil society organizations for advocating universal access to sustainable energy and ecosystem restoration, setting valuable examples for other African nations.

The summit, co-hosted by Ethiopia and the African Union, highlighted African-led climate solutions aligned with Agenda 2063, with discussions focusing on climate finance, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy.

In a world facing increasing climate challenges, the partnership between Ethiopia and Germany is seen as a source of hope and innovation, reinforcing Ethiopia’s role as a continental hub for climate leadership and green growth.
