Addis Ababa, October 20, 2025 (FMC) – The late Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris was a guiding father to all Ethiopians, President Taye Atske-Selassie said during a farewell ceremony held in his honor.
The funeral and prayer ceremony took place at Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa, attended by the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, His Holiness Abune Mathias, the President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa, senior government officials, religious leaders, family, and friends.
Speaking at the event, President Taye described the former president of the Supreme Council the late Grand Mufti as an extraordinary teacher and a father figure whose life was marked by patience, wisdom, and understanding. “Ethiopia has lost a remarkable Ethiopian, a father to all, whose guidance and knowledge inspired unity and moral reflection,” he said.
He added that the late Grand Mufti’s teachings encouraged Ethiopians to discern right from wrong and to act with integrity, calmness, and compassion. “His foresight, generosity, and exemplary character enriched the nation. While we mourn his passing, his contributions and virtuous legacy will forever be remembered,” President Taye noted.
Concluding his remarks, the President called on all Ethiopians to follow the path exemplified by Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris. “Honoring his memory means carrying forward his wisdom, virtue, and commitment to the common good,” he said.
The Ethiopian government and people extend their deepest condolences to the Grand Mufti’s family, friends, and all who cherished his life and legacy.
