Great Ethiopian Run Celebrates 25 Years with Record-Breaking Turnout in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, November 23, 2025 (FMC) — Thousands of runners flooded Meskel Square today as the Great Ethiopian Run marked its 25th anniversary, drawing over 55,000 participants to Africa’s largest 10-kilometer road race.

Launched in 2001 by legendary long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie, the annual event has grown into a powerful symbol of national pride and a global showcase of Ethiopia’s unparalleled running legacy.

This year’s edition, the Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run 2025, united elite athletes, recreational runners, and international participants under the theme “A Nation in 10 KM.” Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie, Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa, and other senior officials joined the festivities to celebrate the milestone.

The city’s newly upgraded streets were transformed into a vibrant festival, with live music, cultural performances, and cheering crowds lining the route. Organizers stressed that the race goes beyond athletics, promoting Ethiopian culture, unity, and community spirit.

Over the past 25 years, the Great Ethiopian Run has attracted hundreds of thousands of runners and supported numerous social initiatives and youth development programs. The event has also contributed significantly to Addis Ababa’s economy, boosting tourism and business activity during the race weekend.

This year, the race received further distinction after being granted World Athletics Heritage status, recognizing its cultural and historical significance in the global running community.

As participants crossed the finish line, they were met with resounding applause—a reflection of the joy, resilience, and unity that have defined the Great Ethiopian Run since its inception.
