Green Legacy, GERD and Aviation Expansion Driving Ethiopia’s Reform Trajectory, UNECA Chief Says

Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 (FMC) – United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Claver Gatete, has said Ethiopia’s reform trajectory is being driven by major long-term development initiatives, including environmental restoration, energy expansion, and aviation growth.

Speaking at the “ETHIOPIA DELIVERS” Summit held under the theme “From Reform to Lasting Change,” the UNECA Chief pointed to the Green Legacy Initiative, the energy role of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the country’s shift toward e-mobility, and the continued expansion of Ethiopian Airlines as key pillars shaping Ethiopia’s development path.

He said these interconnected efforts demonstrate how sustained investment and policy direction can support inclusive growth while strengthening environmental sustainability and economic resilience.

Gatete further noted that Ethiopia’s growing international profile is reflected in its selection to host COP32, describing it as a significant recognition of the country’s role in advancing global climate action.

He said the development signals Africa’s increasing role in shaping global solutions, rather than merely responding to external challenges.

Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment, the UNECA Chief pledged continued support for Ethiopia’s reform agenda and broader continental development priorities.

The summit also heard remarks from Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who underscored the importance of sustained collective effort in advancing national transformation.

He said Ethiopia’s reform process is anchored in unity and shared responsibility, noting that ongoing reforms are intended to build long-term foundations for future generations.

Reflecting on national achievements, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the Prime Minister referenced the guiding principle of Medemer, centered on cooperation, synergy, and collective progress.

He added that reforms are designed as a platform for continued advancement, urging citizens to build on existing gains and pursue higher national aspirations.
