Addis Ababa, June 21, 2026 (FMC) — Speaker of the House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager, has called on Ethiopians across the country to actively engage in the Green Legacy Initiative, underscoring its vital contribution to advancing Ethiopia’s sustainable development objectives.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially launched the 2026 Green Legacy Initiative, setting a nationwide target of planting 8 billion seedlings. The initiative reinforces Ethiopia’s commitment to environmental restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable development through large-scale tree-planting efforts.
Agegnehu made the remarks during the official launch of this year’s Green Legacy Initiative by the Addis Ababa City Administration under the theme “Planting Hope.”
Speaking at the event, the Speaker said the launch comes at a significant time following Ethiopia’s successful 7th General Election. He stressed the need to maintain the momentum of national development through collective action focused on environmental protection and climate resilience.
According to Agegnehu, the Green Legacy Initiative has evolved beyond a tree-planting campaign into a major pillar of sustainable development, while also strengthening environmental conservation efforts nationwide. He noted that Ethiopia’s accomplishments under the initiative have gained growing international recognition, positioning the country as a leading example of large-scale environmental restoration.
The Speaker further stated that the achievements recorded through the Green Legacy campaign stem from strong institutional commitment and coordinated efforts across the country that place environmental protection at the heart of development. These collective endeavors, he added, have continued to enhance the initiative’s effectiveness and impact over time.
Agegnehu also highlighted the progress being made in Addis Ababa through green development and corridor development projects, describing the capital as a model of environmentally sustainable urban transformation and an emerging example for other African cities.
Concluding his remarks, the Speaker urged citizens from all walks of life to take an active part in the Green Legacy Initiative, emphasizing that broad public participation is crucial to achieving Ethiopia’s sustainable development aspirations and building a greener and more climate-resilient future for generations to come.
