His Holiness Abune Mathias Says Meskel Embodies Reconciliation, Equality, and the Spirit of National Progress

Addis Ababa, September 26, 2025 (FMC) — His Holiness Abune Mathias, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC), has called on the nation to unite for the advancement of the country by recognizing that Meskel symbolizes forgiveness and reconciliation, equality and unity, as well as justice and righteousness.

For him, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) demonstrates that the significant and transformative projects realized can indeed be achieved when the populace comes together in unity and solidarity.

In his address at the annual Meskel-Demera celebration, commemorated in a magnificent ceremony in Addis Ababa today, the Patriarch said that since God does not endorse destruction, individuals ought to avoid such actions.

This year’s Meskel celebration holds particular significance as it occurs immediately following the successful completion and inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The Patriarch emphasized that this achievement is a result of the grace bestowed upon us by God and our collective efforts.

He remarked that the GERD represents a triumph that has revitalized the nation. “We express our gratitude to God and to all those who have made their historical contributions to this project.”

The Patriarch also stressed the need to discuss the major development projects that Ethiopia has planned for the future so that they can be completed with quality and speed for the benefit of the people.

Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Patriarchate Head Office, General Manager and Archbishop of South West Shoa and Sheger City Dioceses, Abune Sawiros, on his part, said Meskel is upon which the salvation of human beings has been proclaimed and reconciliation with the Almighty God and peace, love, and unity have been earned.

By forging spiritual unity, we should serve our church and country, he added.

Abune Sawiros emphasized that while celebrating the Finding of the True Cross, we should praise God for all His blessings delivered to us.
