Addis Ababa, November 1, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s pursuit of direct access to the Red Sea and ownership of a seaport represents an effort to correct historical injustices, scholars have told Fana Media Corporation.
Experts emphasized that the outcome of the country’s seaport campaign will affect not only the current generation but also future generations.
Abdu Mohammed (PhD), lecturer and researcher in History and International Relations at Dilla University, described Ethiopia’s loss of its seaport as a historical injustice. He stressed that, given the country’s longstanding challenges to sovereignty, it must vigorously safeguard its legitimate claims to a seaport and seek a lasting solution to the issue.
Abdu noted that Ethiopia’s current efforts to secure seaport access align with broader international interests, and called for sustained initiatives to ensure the matter is addressed appropriately.
He urged Ethiopians to cultivate a shared understanding of the issue to support its resolution.
Similarly, Seyid Ahmed (PhD), lecturer and researcher in History and International Relations at Arba Minch University, said Ethiopia was illegally removed from the Red Sea governance mechanism, a situation that has significantly hindered the country’s overall development.
He described the seaport issue as fundamentally a matter of justice and fairness, and underscored the importance of a strong, coordinated diplomatic approach.
Seyid added that ongoing diplomatic efforts are key to resolving the matter peacefully, and encouraged Ethiopians to work together toward achieving this goal.
