Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu has congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on his re-election, wishing him success in his renewed mandate and the people of Ethiopia continued progress, unity and prosperity.
“I extend my congratulations to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on his re-election as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia,” Workneh said in a message following the Prime Minister’s re-election and swearing-in for a second five-year term.
“I wish him every success in his renewed mandate and the people of Ethiopia continued progress, unity and prosperity as the country advances its national priorities,” he added.
Workneh further reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to continued engagement with the Government and people of Ethiopia, underscoring the regional organization’s support for peace, stability, regional cooperation and shared prosperity.
“IGAD reaffirms its commitment to continued engagement with the Government and people of Ethiopia in support of peace, stability, regional cooperation and shared prosperity,” he said.
The message follows the formal opening of Ethiopia’s 7th parliamentary term and the formation of the new federal government after the June 1, 2026 General Election.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was re-elected by the House of Peoples’ Representatives during the inaugural proceedings of the new parliamentary term and subsequently took the constitutional oath of office, formally beginning his second five-year term as Prime Minister.
