IGAD Executive Secretary Says Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Can Prove Power of Homegrown Solutions for Peace

Addis Ababa, July 15, 2026 (FMC) — IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu has said Ethiopia’s National Dialogue can demonstrate the power of homegrown solutions in resolving differences and advancing lasting peace.

Addressing the opening session of the National Dialogue Conference in Addis Ababa, Workneh described the process as a significant moment in Ethiopia’s long and rich history, saying it provides an opportunity to open a new chapter through dialogue and mutual understanding.

He stressed that no country in history has achieved sustainable development through conflict, noting that nations that have progressed have prioritized their national interests by listening to one another, engaging in discussions and resolving differences peacefully.

The IGAD Executive Secretary said Ethiopia, as one of the world’s ancient civilizations, has deep-rooted traditions of reconciliation and indigenous mechanisms that can help address challenges and heal societal wounds.

He emphasized the importance of looking inward and utilizing Ethiopia’s own mediation and reconciliation practices rather than seeking solutions from outside for internal matters.

Workneh noted that the National Dialogue provides a platform for Ethiopians to demonstrate in practice that differences can be resolved through dialogue, respect and peaceful engagement, adding that the experience could offer lessons beyond Ethiopia.

He said the process represents an opportunity to transform political culture by moving away from attempts to settle disagreements through force and strengthening a culture of consultation.

The IGAD Executive Secretary called on participants to carry out their responsibilities with a strong sense of commitment, keeping in mind the hopes and expectations of the people they represent and future generations.

He reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to standing with Ethiopia throughout the National Dialogue process and supporting efforts aimed at strengthening peace and stability.
