Addis Ababa, August 18, 2026 (FMC) — The leaders of the illegal TPLF have only one option left if they are to avoid further destruction: abandon their destructive course and surrender to the federal government before it is too late, former TPLF founder Dr. Aregawi Berhe said.
Dr. Aregawi told the Ethiopian News Agency that Ethiopia is a resilient country with a long record of overcoming the challenges it has faced, stressing that attempts by the illegal TPLF to destabilize the country while serving as a proxy for external forces have repeatedly failed.
He said the group’s current efforts, as part of what he described as a destructive agenda, are equally doomed to failure and will lead nowhere.
Describing the Eritrean regime as a dried-up force that is struggling to advance its interests, Dr. Aregawi said it is seeking to exploit the youth of the Tigray region for its own harmful objectives after exhausting its own young generation.
The illegal TPLF’s continued efforts to cling to what he described as this spent force, he said, will ultimately lead only to the group’s own destruction.
Dr. Aregawi therefore urged the illegal TPLF leadership to abandon the destructive path it has pursued and surrender to the federal government before the opportunity for a peaceful resolution is lost.
He noted that the federal government has repeatedly extended its hand for peace, while many armed combatants have responded to the call and are returning to peaceful civilian life.
The illegal TPLF leadership, he stressed, should likewise seize the peace opportunity offered to them rather than continue down a path that serves no constructive purpose.
He further said the federal government is expected to play its part in receiving the group’s leaders should they choose the path of peace, as it has done with other armed groups that have laid down their arms and returned to peaceful life.
