ILO reiterates its commitment to inclusive skills dev’t, decent job creation in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, June 26, 2025 (FMC) — The International Labour Organization (ILO) reaffirmed its dedication to supporting inclusive skills development and decent job creation in Ethiopia during a recent visit to the Somali Regional State.

A delegation led by the ILO Country Office Director for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan, Khumbula Ndaba, met with Chief Administrator of Somali Region Mr. Mustafe Omer to discuss ongoing collaboration and priorities for promoting decent work and inclusive development in the region.

The meeting highlighted significant projects, including the completion of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) center in Kaberibeyah and the inauguration of the Digital Innovation Hub in Jigjiga.

Mr. Mustefe emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating that the ILO’s support has been timely in addressing structural challenges that affect youth employment potential.

Discussions focused on scaling up vocational training, advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs at the Digital Innovation Hub, enhancing youth employment initiatives, and exploring public-private partnerships (PPPs), ILO Horn of Africa told Fana Media Corporation, ILO regional office told Fana Media Corporation.

The ILO reiterated its commitment to inclusive skills development and decent job creation in Ethiopia.

In line with its commitment, the ILO’s PROSPECTS program has boosted vocational training for refugees and host communities in Ethiopia. Partnering with Jigjiga Polytechnic College, it recently graduated 75 youth in skills like electrical installation and plumbing, promoting social and economic inclusion. The program aims to train 20,000 refugees and hosts by 2027.

Additionally, the ILO launched a Digital Innovation Hub in Jigjiga to provide digital skills training, co-working spaces, and connectivity for refugees and local communities. This initiative supports Ethiopia’s goal to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive economic growth through technology.
