Indian PM Begins Three-Nation Tour to Strengthen Ties Across West Asia and Africa

Addis Ababa, December 15, 2025 (FMC) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday began a three-nation visit to West Asia and Africa, aimed at strengthening his country’s diplomatic, economic and strategic engagement across those regions, Indian media reported.

The visit, scheduled from December 15 to 18, includes high-level bilateral meetings, engagements with political leaders and interactions with Indian communities in three countries, according to official statements cited by several Indian news outlets.

On Monday, Modi arrived first in Jordan, where the visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He is scheduled to hold talks with King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein and senior Jordanian officials. Discussions are expected to cover bilateral cooperation, regional developments and efforts to expand economic and people-to-people ties, Indian media reports said.

It was mentioned in the reports that India and Jordan cooperate in areas including trade, education, defence training and regional dialogue.

From Jordan, the Indian prime minister will travel to Ethiopia, marking his first official visit to the country as prime minister, according to several reports. In Addis Ababa, Modi is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, focusing on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, development partnership and capacity building.

Ethiopia hosts the headquarters of the African Union, making Addis Ababa a key diplomatic centre for Africa-related engagement. India and Ethiopia have long-standing ties in education, health, infrastructure and technical cooperation, Indian outlets noted.

The final leg of the tour will take Modi to Oman, where the two countries are marking 70 years of diplomatic relations. In Muscat, Modi is expected to meet Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to discuss expanding cooperation in trade, energy, defence and maritime security, according to Indian media and official briefings.

Economic engagement is expected to feature prominently during the Oman visit, alongside discussions on investment and regional cooperation. India and Oman share close ties supported by a large Indian expatriate community.

Indian officials said the tour reflects New Delhi’s efforts to consolidate partnerships with key countries in West Asia and Africa and to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
