Japanese Film Festival and Japan Culture Day Set for Addis Ababa in November 2025

Addis Ababa, October 30, 2025 (FMC) — The Embassy of Japan, in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will host the Japan Film Festival and Japan Culture Day in Addis Ababa on 1 and 8 November 2025, at Century Cinema Hall and Juventus Club, respectively.

The celebrations kick off on 1 November with the premiere screening of Godzilla Minus One, directed by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki. This 2023 Academy Award-winning film for Best Visual Effects combines gripping human drama with spectacular visuals, telling a story of personal redemption and national resilience.

On 8 November, Addis Ababa will come alive with a day-long cultural festival showcasing the richness of Japanese traditions. Highlights include martial arts demonstrations by Ethiopian Karate masters, live music and dance, calligraphy, manga drawing, and authentic Japanese cuisine. The Katim Dance Team will perform a mesmerizing piece exploring Japan’s mythical and historical heritage through movement and artistry.

The festival will also feature alumni from Japan’s MEXT and ABE Initiative, offering guidance on studying in Japan and available scholarship opportunities. Japanese culinary delights will be prepared by the Ambassador’s residence chef, alongside five renowned Japan-inspired restaurants in Addis Ababa: Hotto, JADE Sheraton, Kaz Sushi and Japanese Fusion Restaurant, and Kokoro.

Throughout November, nine acclaimed Japanese films will be screened at the National Theatre, Addis Ababa University, and seven other major universities nationwide, providing audiences with a deeper insight into Japan’s cinematic landscape.
