JICA Praises Ethiopia’s Efforts to Transform Agrarian Economy to Industry

Addis Ababa, June 30, 2025 (FMC) – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Ethiopia has appreciated the commitment that Ethiopia has upheld in transforming its economy from agriculture to Industry based.

Kensuke OSHIMA, Chief Representative, JICA Ethiopia Office, told local news agency ENA that Ethiopia has been making a significant shift from an agricultural to an industrial based economy.

Recalling the opportunity, he had to visit Ethiopia 20 years ago, he witnessed the multifaceted changes in the country at present.

The Chief Representative also reaffirmed JICA’s commitment to bolstering development cooperation in the country, noting the two country’s long-standing partnership.

The country’s strategic focus on industrialization is also backed by substantial investments in crucial sectors like education, health, and infrastructure, he added.

He explained that JICA’s development initiatives are broad, covering vital areas such as agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, industrialization, and education.

Oshima also cited successful collaborations, including efforts to promote market-oriented agriculture, boost rice productivity, and advance water sector development.

Beyond technical assistance, JICA places a strong emphasis on capacity building, aiming to strengthen both institutional frameworks and human capital throughout Ethiopia.

The development projects currently underway in Addis Ababa and other regions clearly demonstrate the success of the country, Oshima stated.

He concluded by reiterating JICA’s firm commitment to collaborate closely with the Ethiopian government to foster sustainable and inclusive development.
