Rome, March 18, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Italy held high-level discussions in Rome, focusing on strategic cooperation and the advancement of major development projects.
The Ethiopian delegation was led by Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance, and included Demitu Hambisa Bonsa, Ambassador to Italy, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ethiopian Airlines Group. They met with Giancarlo Giorgetti, Minister of Economy and Finance of Italy.
Discussions focused on key bilateral initiatives, including development policy financing and priority infrastructure projects. Italy confirmed its support for Ethiopia’s development policy program, co-financed with the World Bank, reinforcing the country’s macroeconomic reform agenda.
The Koysha Hydropower Project was highlighted as a priority. Italy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting project completion and addressing remaining financing needs. Both sides noted progress in refinancing and securing new funding, with final steps expected to be concluded in the coming months.
The Bishoftu Airport project, a national flagship initiative, was also central to the talks. Italy commended the performance of Ethiopian Airlines and pledged support for financing selected components through Italian financial institutions. Both sides agreed to initiate technical discussions involving Ethiopian Airlines and relevant advisors to develop financing structures and modalities.
The delegation and Italian officials additionally explored further support for other priority development projects. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen Ethiopia–Italy partnership and advance strategic initiatives that foster sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
