Koysha Hydropower Project Demonstrates Ethiopia’s Development Potential and Resilience

Addis Ababa, October 26, 2025 (FMC) – Ministers attending a discussion at the Koysha Hydroelectric Dam Project highlighted that the initiative demonstrates Ethiopia’s potential to achieve development efficiently and overcome challenges.

The remarks were made during a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), where he and his cabinet reviewed the country’s macroeconomic performance for the first 100 days of the 2018 E.C. (2025/26 fiscal year).

Ministers noted that the Koysha Hydropower Project serves as a model of efficiency and effectiveness, showing that projects guided by a clear vision and strong leadership can be successfully implemented.

The Minister of Defense, Engineer Aisha Mohammed, stated that Ethiopia’s structural economic transformation is being realized with visible results across industry, agriculture, mining, and other sectors.

She also highlighted that corridor development projects in urban and rural areas are improving citizens’ livelihoods and that Ethiopia’s potential is now attracting attention from countries that previously had no relations.

On the revival of the project, the Minister of Irrigation and Lowland Areas, Mr. Abraham Belay, recalled that Koysha had been stalled before the current government but was revived through decisive leadership and clear planning.

Minister of Industry, Melaku Alebel, emphasized that despite initial frustration and lack of capacity, the project was successfully relaunched, demonstrating Ethiopia’s ability to overcome obstacles and implement complex initiatives.

The Minister of Revenue, Ms. Aynalem Nigusse, noted that major national projects like Koysha lay a strong foundation for Ethiopia’s path to self-reliance and serve as a source of national pride.

Ministers also highlighted the benefits of community engagement and knowledge transfer.

For her part, the Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, stated that producing project inputs locally has reduced costs and labor while providing a training opportunity beyond mere job creation.

Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Md. Ergoge Tesfaye, observed that social services delivered to the local community, such as roads and electricity, strengthen community ownership of the project.

The ministers further underscored that the knowledge gained at Koysha will serve as a valuable resource for future infrastructure projects.

Collectively, the ministers affirmed that the macroeconomic performance of the first 100 days reflects strong results across sectors, and that the Koysha Hydropower Project exemplifies Ethiopia’s ability to achieve ambitious development goals through vision, leadership, and citizen engagement.
