“Life in the Royal Court” Brings Gondar’s History to Life for Tourists

Addis Ababa, September 28, 2025 (FMC) — Tourists visiting Gondar’s historic Royal Enclosure can now experience the grandeur of Ethiopia’s royal past, thanks to a newly launched project titled “Life in the Royal Court”, Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa announced.

The initiative, officially unveiled at the majestic Fasilides Castles, offers an immersive, research-based reenactment of 17th-century royal life. Visitors can witness the kings’ daily routines, governance, traditions, and ceremonial pageantry, transforming the castles into a living history experience.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Selamawit highlighted that the project brings the recently restored Gondar Royal Enclosure to life for tourists in an engaging and relatable way. She noted that the initiative was developed with the expertise of historians, scholars, and cultural experts, ensuring both historical accuracy and a rich visitor experience.

Over 300 performers participated in the theatrical presentations, illustrating the lifestyles and leadership of Gondar’s monarchs while celebrating Ethiopia’s heritage and creating opportunities for young artists.

Mr. Melkamu Tsegaye, Head of the Amhara Regional Culture and Tourism Bureau, emphasized that the project transforms the visitor experience at Fasilides Castles. He noted that tourists who previously only visited the buildings can now explore the living history of the kings in a theatrical form, enhancing their connection to the past.

Mr. Chalachew Dagnew, First Deputy Mayor of Gondar, said the palace’s renovation and maintenance under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has significantly strengthened Gondar’s status as a cultural and tourism hub. He added that the city administration will continue to support and monitor the project to ensure its success.

The project aligns with broader federal and regional government initiatives to redevelop existing tourist destinations and develop new ones across Ethiopia. Officials expressed optimism that the initiative will extend tourists’ stays, increase visitor flow, and generate economic and cultural benefits for the local community.

Artists, historians, state ministers, and other dignitaries attended the launch, witnessing the immersive reenactments that showcase the lives and governance of Gondar’s former kings. The project is expected to inspire visitors to explore Gondar’s rich history and contribute to Ethiopia’s growing cultural tourism sector.
